Fashion’s New Digital Frontier: The Metaverse
Is the future of luxury fashion unfolding in a digital realm where virtual experiences redefine our concept of style?
The metaverse represents a convergence of our physical world with a sophisticated virtual environment, often seen as the next evolution of the internet. Enabled by technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), the metaverse offers a persistent, shared digital space where users, as avatars, can navigate diverse experiences while transferring their digital identities and assets across platforms.
This vision of a digital universe, blending familiar and novel experiences, has intrigued futurists since before the internet’s inception. However, recent advances—such as the proliferation of mobile devices, the expansion of high-speed internet, and the popularity of augmented reality games like Pokémon Go—have brought this concept closer to reality. These technological leaps, coupled with AI advancements and the growth of online gaming, have transformed the metaverse from a speculative idea into an emerging digital frontier.
The Impact of Meta’s Vision and the Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift toward remote interactions and digital engagement, catalysing significant innovation in online spaces. In response, Facebook rebranded as Meta in November 2021 and committed $10 billion to developing virtual experiences. This strategic move positioned the metaverse as the future of computing interfaces, sparking considerable excitement. Figures like Bill Gates envisioned a rapid transition from traditional screens to immersive metaverse environments for virtual meetings. However, this shift has been slower than anticipated, highlighting both the potential and challenges of this evolving digital landscape.
Coach’s Innovative Approach to Virtual Fashion

Luxury brands are increasingly exploring the metaverse’s potential, with Coach leading the way by launching its first virtual collection on platforms such as Roblox and Zepeto. This initiative aligns with Coach’s “Find Your Courage” campaign, merging high fashion with cutting-edge technology to engage a younger, tech-savvy audience.
On Roblox’s Fashion Famous 2 and Fashion Klossette, Coach’s 2024 spring collection is available, offering exclusive items for purchase with Robux, the platform’s in-game currency. This approach showcases how metaverse platforms like Roblox can enhance user engagement through gamification. Leveraging Roblox’s proprietary engine and Lua scripting, Coach has introduced interactive elements such as scavenger hunts, setting new standards for virtual fashion promotion. Early metrics reveal increased player engagement and in-game purchases, underscoring the effectiveness of digital fashion in the metaverse.
On Zepeto, users can explore a Coach-themed environment, including a virtual photo booth where avatars can don the Coach collection curated by Nova.
Zepeto’s advanced 3D modelling and digital personalization, powered by Unity, have created detailed, immersive environments that boost brand interactions and social media shares, demonstrating the synergy between digital fashion and social engagement.
Reimagining Virtual and Physical Retail Experiences

From 19-21 July 2024, Coach’s metaverse strategy extended into the physical realm with an event at the Coach House on Fifth Avenue, New York. This event bridges digital and physical retail by incorporating AR-powered virtual try-ons and VR-driven immersive experiences. These technologies have successfully increased foot traffic and in-store engagement, setting a new benchmark for integrating metaverse innovations into traditional retail.
Coach’s approach aligns with similar strategies by luxury brands like Gucci (Gucci Garden) and Balenciaga (Fortnite x Balenciaga), who have also merged fashion with digital experiences on platforms like Roblox and Fortnite. Despite these advancements, challenges such as maintaining consumer interest and overcoming technical obstacles in digital-physical integration remain. Coach’s strategy of blending digital and physical experiences mitigates these risks and positions the brand as a leader in the evolving fashion landscape.
