How E-Commerce Giants Are Using UX to Power Business Growth

E-commerce giants are harnessing UX-driven strategies to improve customer engagement, increase conversions, and drive significant business growth. Here is how.

Global internet usage is expanding rapidly, with more than five billion people online. Retail e-commerce sales worldwide are expected to increase by 39% in the coming years, exceeding $8 trillion by 2027.  This remarkable shift not only highlights the increasing reliance on digital platforms for shopping but also emphasizes the critical need for businesses to enhance their user experience to capture this expanding market.

E-commerce giants are already anticipating this shift, proactively optimizing their user experience across their digital platforms. As e-commerce continues to evolve, tech giants are increasingly focusing on enhancing user experience (UX) to meet the demands of modern consumers.

Enhancing Online Shopping: eBay’s Simplified Experience

Among these leaders, eBay has recently made significant strides in this area. After extensive research and testing, the California-based eCommerce giant has updated its search experience to be more interactive and visually appealing for shoppers.

The revamped search experience prioritizes visual richness, featuring larger, high-resolution images and a streamlined navigation system. With a new “Shopping View” that eliminates sidebar ads, users can easily browse through visually driven categories like clothing, accessories, and toys. These enhancements not only make the platform more intuitive but also reflect retailer’s commitment to providing a seamless shopping experience.

Walmart’s Streamlined Website: A Fresh Take on E-Commerce

Walmart has launched a redesigned website and app that offer a cleaner shopping experience, significantly improving upon its previous cluttered interface. The new layout features vibrant blocks that showcase departments and seasonal promotions, making it easier for shoppers to find relevant products.

The homepage emphasizes items for upcoming holidays and events, while tailored shopping categories and horizontally scrolling product rows enhance browsing. According to Executive VP Tom Ward, this redesign fosters “a more engaging way to browse” through Walmart’s inventory.

Compared to Amazon, which relies heavily on a slideshow banner and product grids, Walmart’s approach allows for quicker discovery. Users have noted a more pleasant experience, thanks in part to fewer irrelevant search results and faster shipping options, including in-store pickup.

This update is part of Walmart’s ongoing strategy to compete with Amazon. The company has expanded its online Marketplace and introduced the Walmart Plus subscription service, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing the customer experience in the digital retail landscape.

How Superior UX Design Fuels E-Commerce Success

Optimizing user experience (UX) on e-commerce websites is a vital driver of sales and revenue growth, according to the consultants. A PwC report  notes that 73% of consumers consider customer experience crucial in their purchasing decisions, highlighting the role of optimized UX in retaining customers and fostering repeat business. As competition intensifies, leveraging UX improvements becomes essential for standing out in a crowded marketplace.

Evidence from researchers also speaks in the favour of UX optimisation. Harvard Business Review highlights a profound connection between exceptional customer experience and increased spending and loyalty. Businesses that prioritize delivering outstanding experiences often witness a remarkable boost in customer retention, resulting in higher sales and enhanced customer lifetime value.

As consumer preferences shift and new technologies emerge, is your organization ready to adapt its user experience strategy to meet and exceed these evolving expectations?
